Association Name Change
Echuca Basketball Association is excited to announce its name change to Echuca Moama Basketball Association (EMBA). Over the past two years, the Committee have been working with Basketball Victoria, to secure the name change, which now represents the border towns and its members.
In its application to Basketball Victoria, EBA outlined Echuca and Moama are border towns, with a population catchment of 20000, currently supporting and participating in the Echuca Basketball Association. Breaking this figure down, 14 0000 members are Echuca based and the remaining 6 000 are from across the border, Moama. It is evident with these figures that 2 Associations would not be able to successfully operate, but instead compete for membership, hindering both Associations in the long term.
Currently Deniliquin is the closest NSW association in the region, located over an hour drive north of Echuca, hence it is not viable for players interested in playing basketball to travel so far, when EBA operated 5 minutes away.
Echuca-Moama have a strong support bond of members and both councils are also supportive of this unique arrangement, but supporting not only our local basketball tournament, but also Jamboree. With this ongoing relationship, is makes sense to change the Association’s name, to include the twin towns in the name. Murray Council is in the process of developing and building a 2-court stadium, which will only strengthen the Association, to increase teams’ numbers into the current competitions and to be able to offer further programs in the further.
Basketball Victoria confirmed the Board had accepted the name change at its September meeting of EBA to Echuca Moama Basketball Association, with Basketball NSW not having any objection to the name change.
The new season will start on 8th November 2021 through until 8th April 2022, with registrations now open for all players to register their interest. Lisa Baker, president of EMBA is looking forward to an increased number of new and past players to join the association after a disruptive 2 years due to covid 19. The committee have subsided fees for all players and are hoping that this will assist families and players with returning to sport.
